In a study conducted at the University of Florida, sea turtles were packed into water tanks, and then researchers created a variety of flavors above the water surface.
Surprisingly, sea turtles were indifferent to clean plastic, but excitedly pushed their heads out of the water after smelling the plastic soaked in seawater, even more intense than when they smelled normal food.
It turns out that plastics begin to release chemicals after floating in the ocean. And microbes and algae attached to the plastic bags, that shaped like a jellyfish, are like a dish for sea turtles.
